Jonny Evans named in Man Utd pre-season squad after signing new deal at Old Trafford

Jonny Evans has signed a contract with United after impressing Erik ten Hag.

Jonny Evans has been named in Manchester United's latest pre-season squad after signing a new deal at Old Trafford.

United made the shock announcement on Tuesday when confirming their travelling squad to face Lyon at Murrayfield in Edinburgh on Wednesday.

"Experienced defender Jonny Evans has signed a short-term deal to enable him to take part in Manchester United's upcoming pre-season games in Edinburgh and San Diego," read a club statement.

"The Academy graduate had been training with the Under-21s whilst considering his options, following his departure from Leicester City at the end of last season.

"As part of the Academy training programme, he has also taken part in a number of first-team sessions and impressed Erik ten Hag and the coaching staff.

"Evans, who has been capped 102 times by Northern Ireland, will travel to Edinburgh as part of the group to face Lyon on Wednesday.

"Jonny will then join up with the Academy group that will travel to San Diego, while the first-team squad are in New York."

Evans played 198 senior games for United before moving on to West Brom in 2015.

He spent three seasons at the Hawthorns before joining Leicester City, going on to make 152 appearances for the Foxes.

The 35-year-old became a free agent last month when his contract at Leicester expired, allowing him to sign his short-term deal with United.

In the same club statement, United also confirmed defenders Tyrell Malacia and Rhys Bennett have sustained injuries that will rule them out of the game against Lyon and the pre-season tour of the United States.
