Why JJ Gabriel can't sign a Man Utd contract despite making debut vs Atletico Madrid

Despite making his Manchester United debut, JJ Gabriel currently can't sign his first professional contract with the club.

The 15-year-old is one of the most talked-about young prospects in world football after being dubbed 'Kid Messi' in a viral YouTube video.

Gabriel's star continued to rise with a string of quality performances across United's age groups, including two goals on his U18s debut against Leeds United in April 2025. Last season, he was named Player of the Season in the U18s Premier League, a campaign which also saw him help United reach the FA Youth Cup final.

Naturally, there is now hype around Gabriel and his eventual steps into first-team football. United are doing their best to manage expectations, with U18s head coach Darren Fletcher declaring in January: "I couldn't speak highly enough of JJ.

"He's got an amazing family and amazing support around him. He's somebody we're delighted to have at the club.

"There's a lot of noise around him and deservedly so because he's a real talented kid."

Gabriel's opportunity to showcase his talents came on Saturday afternoon. He replaced goalscorer Bryan Mbeumo in United's 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid, offering glimpses in a nine-minute cameo.

United defender Leny Yoro called Gabriel 'humble' and praised his work ethic. Yoro is aware of all the pressures that come with promise at such a young age, having arrived at Old Trafford in a £52m deal aged 18.

Clubs across Europe are well aware of Gabriel's talents. Barcelona have previously been cited as a potential suitor should Gabriel wish to continue his development elsewhere.

Why JJ Gabriel can't sign a Man Utd contract yet

While Gabriel is training with the first team and on their pre-season tour right now, he's not put pen to paper on a professional contract with United.

It's nothing to be concerned about if you're on the red side of Manchester. Official Premier League rules state: "It’s also important to know that your child cannot be offered a professional contract until their U16 year or enter into one until they are 17 years old."

Iconic Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler further discussed Gabriel's contract situation on The Joy Of Football podcast, alongside Neil Barnett.

"The case that's being discussed a lot in football at the moment is JJ Gabriel," Tyler remarked. "I think he has a five-year deal that gives him one or two guaranteed years as a full-time professional."

Barnett replied: "You can't sign a professional contract until you're 17. So if he's 15, he's been promised a three-year contract when he turns 17. That is standard now."

Several teenagers have made their mark on the Premier League in recent seasons. Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman both made their Premier League debuts for Arsenal aged 15, while Rio Ngumoha became Liverpool's youngest-ever goalscorer on his debut as a 16-year-old.

Barnett continued: "If you're going to keep a scholar in your academy, it's standard to give them a three-year contract at 17, which is bizarre if they don't end up good enough."
