Gary Neville Notices Ruben Amorim Red Flag That Erik Ten Hag Used To Do

United lost 3-0 to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Gary Neville has spotted another major issue with Manchester United under Ruben Amorim - and it is a problem that was present under Erik ten Hag.

United lost 3-0 to City in the Manchester derby on Sunday to pile further pressure on Amorim's position.

Erling Haaland netted a brace for the hosts after Phil Foden had given City the lead with a first half header.

United did carry some threat in the closing stages going forward, with Bryan Mbeumo forcing a fine save out of City debutant Gianluigi Donnarumma and hitting another effort wide.

But Amorim's substitutions and tactical changes left United hugely exposed defensively, with Luke Shaw giving the ball away in the build-up to the third goal and giving Haaland the entire defensive half to run into.

And Neville has spotted a major tactical flaw that he has noticed since Ten Hag's time in charge.

Ten months have passed since Ten Hag was sacked by United in November 2024.

Speaking on Sky Sports while on co-commentary, the former United defender stated: "One thing I would say about the substitutes that Ruben Amorim makes, he always changes his back three.

"That is a thing you'd want to keep most stable in any games of football. So many times, Maguire comes on central. De Ligt gets shoved to the right. Yoro off. I'm not sure why you'd change your defence so much.

"It's something that Erik ten Hag used to do. So many substitutions in your defensive line. The one that I thought might come off today is Luke Shaw, who's had a really difficult game."

Amorim responds after Man Utd defeat

Speaking to Sky Sports after the defeat, Amorim accepted responsibility for the scoreline and added that he could not fault any of his players for effort at the Etihad Stadium.

"I know that this is a game that is really hard on our fans," he said. "A lot of fans, pundits... and I know that.

"But I cannot point one finger at one player of effort. With game intelligence, a lot of things, yes, we can improve. But that is my fault. And that is my part, so I'll be okay."
