Erik ten Hag was praised for his gesture towards Newport County manager Graham Coughlan after Manchester United’s 4-2 FA Cup win.

United overcame a scare against League Two’s Newport at Rodney Park on Sunday to seal their place into the FA Cup fifth round, where they will play either Bristol City or Nottingham Forest.

Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock early in the first half before Kobbie Mainoo swept home his first senior goal.

But Newport reignited the tie courtesy of a deflected Bryn Morris' thunderbolt before boyhood United fan Will Evans levelled proceedings to send the home crowd into raptures.

United reclaimed control, however, with Antony scoring his first goal of the season before Rasmus Hojlund bundled home to seal the win.

Despite the defeat, Newport gave United a difficult game. And after the FA Cup encounter, Ten Hag gifted Coughlan a bottle of wine, picked out by Sir Alex Ferguson, in recognition of the League Two side’s performance.

The bottle of Antinori Tignanello is advertised on some UK retailers at over £200 and described as “one of the first red wines in the Chianti Classico region not to use white grapes”.

After undergoing his media duties, a beaming Ten Hag shook hands with McLoughlan and said:”'We have a small gift for you."

Coughlan jokingly responded: “Brilliant. You know I don't drink wine, I drink Budweiser."

Ten Hag continued: “Really, Budweiser? American beer? But this is a really very good one chosen by Sir Alex [Ferguson] so maybe your wife will enjoy it.

“Maybe have a taste, I think you will like it. Well done for tonight.”

On the game itself, Ten Hag told the BBC: "First 35 minutes it was very comfortable. It should have been 3-0 or 4-0. They created no chance and then out of nothing - I think also it was a foul - they score.

"Then straight after half-time, a mistake, ours, defensive transition not great. Then you have to start again to win this game. Finally we did, so, boys, well done."
