Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce staff left 'stunned' by Erik ten Hag's treatment of Man Utd player

Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce staff left 'stunned' by Erik ten Hag's treatment of Man Utd player

Erik ten Hag's decision left the Fenerbahce bench totally stunned

Manchester United and Fenerbahce played out a 1-1 draw in the Europa League and Erik ten Hag’s decision has been called into question.

United are still searching for their first win in the Europa League after Youssef En-Nesyri cancelled out Christian Eriksen’s first-half goal to rescue a point for the hosts.

Jose Mourinho’s reunion with Manchester United was never going to go without issue and the Portuguese was sent off in the second-half after he felt his side should have been awarded a penalty when Manuel Ugarte challenged Bright Osayi-Samuel in the area.

Erik ten Hag raised eyebrows with his team selection in Turkey, opting to start full-back Noussair Mazraoui in the no.10 position in the absence of Bruno Fernandes but another decision from the United manager has reportedly stunned the Fenerbahce hierarchy.

Mourinho admitted in his post-match interview that he wasn’t entirely surprised to see the former Ajax defender start higher up the pitch but a report from The Athletic claims Ten Hag’s use of Amad left the Fenerbahce bench stunned.

Much to the dismay of United supporters on social media, Amad was left on the bench and was evidently upset he did not start the game.

The report claims some members of Mourinho’s staff were ‘stunned’ that the Ivory Coast international had not been introduced earlier in the game and ‘feared the worst’ when he took on Mert Muldur with his first touch before being fouled.

It was an injury to Antony that allowed Amad to stake his claim for a starting berth and Ten Hag explained it was the Brazilian’s performances in training that allowed him to jump ahead in the pecking order.

Ten Hag said: “Amad is doing well. But we have to reward the performances of Antony in training. He is a threat almost every training session, so I felt in that moment to bring him, to decide the game.”

Antony was substituted minutes after being subbed on and was pictured leaving the stadium on crutches, adding to Ten Hag’s injury woes this season.

United are back in action on October 27 with an away trip to West Ham and Amad will once again be pushing for a place in the starting XI.

The 22-year-old has one goal and one assist in four Premier League starts this season.
