Garnacho Replacement Blow for Man Utd After Target Rejects Transfer Move

Alejandro Garnacho was sold to Chelsea during the summer transfer window.

Manchester United reportedly singled out one player to replace Alejandro Garnacho, but a move never materialised.

Last month, Argentine youngster Garnacho ended his United career by leaving Old Trafford for Premier League rivals Chelsea.

It was reported that the 21-year-old moved to Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £40 million.

Speaking after signing for Chelsea, Garnacho said: "It's an incredible moment for my family and I to join this great club. I can't wait to get started. I watched the Club World Cup and to join the world champions is special – we're the best team in the world!

"I really liked watching Chelsea when I was younger. I have a winning mentality. I have passion and a big personality. It’s a natural fit with a club like Chelsea, which have just won the Club World Cup."

Garnacho became Chelsea's fifth new attacker of the summer, following the likes of Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Estevao and Jamie Gittens.

For United, it was claimed that they wanted to sign Lyon star Malick Fofana after Garnacho's departure and Matheus Cunha's injury.

According to Foot Mercato, who wrote: "Under the impetus of a Jorge Mendes who played the matchmaker between Manchester United and the player's father, the Red Devils tried their luck.

"The English club was just waiting for a signal from the player's father to launch hostilities. Signal that never came."

Aside from United, it has been suggested that Fofana has also been linked with the likes of Everton, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Chelsea.

So far in the 25/26 season, Belgian star Fofana has scored one goal and provided one assist in three matches in Ligue 1.

The 20-year-old has impressed after a decent 24/25 season, during which he amassed five goals and four assists in 29 matches in the top flight of French football.

In the Europa League, Fofana managed six goals and one assist in 10 outings.

United are back in Premier League action this weekend when they take on local rivals Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
