Maidstone goalkeeper breaks down in tears after being named Man of the Match on BBC after FA Cup victory

Maidstone United have sent shockwaves down the EFL with a sensational 2-1 victory against Championship side Ipswich Town.

Maidstone United, a National League South team, caused a major upset in the FA Cup by defeating Championship contenders Ipswich Town in the fourth round at Portman Road.

Despite being outclassed for much of the match, Maidstone capitalised on two brilliant counter-attack goals from Lamar Reynolds and Sam Corne, their only shots on target. This stunning victory came against the odds, with Maidstone sitting 98 places below Ipswich in the football hierarchy.

The clear stand-out performance of the game was from the Maidstone goalkeeper, Lucas Covolan, who made 12 saves during the match to put the non-league side in the hat for the next round.

At the full time whistle Covolan dropped to the floor while the rest of his teammates ran of celebrating with the travelling fans.

The Brazilian was visibly emotional following his heroic performance, and was almost in tears as he gave a post match interview.

Covolan told BBC Sport: "I want to thank my wife, family and everyone who has supported us."

The Maidstone manager George Elokobi was keen to highlight his goalkeeper in his post match interview.

Elokobi told BBC One:"Lucas was one of my last signings 48 hours before the league started. In games like this, big games, he commands the box and leads by example.

"He has kept us in so many games this season and that was exceptional. Amazing from him but exceptional performances from the entire group of players," Elokobi added.
