Liverpool set new Premier League record in Sheffield United win to boost title bid

Liverpool set new Premier League record in Sheffield United win to boost title bid

Liverpool have broken a Premier League record.

Liverpool set a new Premier League record in their victory against Sheffield United on Thursday.

The pressure was on Liverpool at Anfield after both Manchester City and Arsenal won the night before, but Jurgen Klopp's side got the job done against a stubborn Sheffield United.

Goals from Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo gave Liverpool a 3-1 win that saw them return to the top of the Premier League table.

Nunez opened the scoring in fortuitous circumstances when he charged down Ivo Grbic's attempted clearance, but a Conor Bradley own goal brought the visitors level just before the hour mark.

It took a Mac Allister thunderbolt to restore Liverpool's lead, before Gakpo headed in a late third to wrap up the win and send his side back to the top of the standings.

Though Sheffield United caused Liverpool problems at times, Klopp's side dominated proceedings.

Liverpool clocked nine shots on target - 29 in total - and completed 708 passes compared to their opponent's 80.

However, it was the possession stats that saw the home side break a Premier League record.

Liverpool enjoyed a remarkable 83.1 per cent possession, a new record in the top flight.

The previous record was actually set by Liverpool almost two years ago, when they had 83 per cent of the ball during a 2-0 win against city rivals Everton in April 2022.

Manchester City also clocked the previous record of 83 per cent when they beat Swansea City 5-0 in April 2018.

Liverpool now lead the Premier League title race with 70 points with eight games left to play.

Arsenal are in second position with 68 points after they beat Luton Town 2-0 on Wednesday, while Man City are third with 67 after defeating Aston Villa 4-1.
