Mohamed Salah's farewell message to Trent Alexander-Arnold after the right-back announced he was leaving Liverpool has got fans talking.

Alexander-Arnold confirmed in a video message posted to social media on Monday that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract in June.

It was subsequently reported that the 26-year-old had reached a verbal agreement to sign for reigning Champions League winners Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Liverpool fans have certainly had a mixed response to the news, with some comparing Alexander-Arnold's decision to the contrasting ones made by Steven Gerrard, Steve McManaman and Michael Owen during their careers.

Gerrard stayed at Liverpool throughout the prime years of his career, having rejected Real Madrid on more than one occasion.

McManaman and Owen, meanwhile, both moved directly to the Bernabeu from Liverpool.

Current Reds stars have begun to comment on Alexander-Arnold's announcement, with Salah - who himself signed a new contract to remain at Anfield last month - taking to Twitter to post a message to Liverpool's number 66.

Alongside several photos of the pair together on the pitch, he wrote: "It's been a pleasure sharing a special friendship with you and playing alongside you.

"I wish you all the best and I am sure we will meet again."

Salah's last remark has made Liverpool fans believe that the Egyptian star is already waiting to defeat both Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid in any future competitive matches between the two sides.

One wrote: "You'll meet him again when we humiliate Madrid next season in the UCL."

A second joked: "'I'm sure we will meet again' sounds like a threat."

And a third added: "Bro told him, I am coming to cook you in Madrid, we still have a score to settle."

And a fourth wrote: "You'll meet again but that time you'll give him a hard time on the pitch."
