Liverpool fans convinced Andoni Iraola has perfect player to build team around after Wrexham game

Liverpool fans are excited about one player's prospects under Andoni Iraola after a superb display in their friendly victory over Wrexham.

Liverpool beat Sunderland 4-2 last week in Nashville and continued their winning start under new boss Iraola with a 1-0 win over Championship side Wrexham.

Rio Ngumoha scored the only goal of the game 75 minutes into the clash at the Yankee Stadium in New York.

But it was midfielder Trey Nyoni who perhaps made the biggest impression, playing the first half in midfield alongside Dominik Szoboszlai and looking completely at home.

The 19-year-old has made a total of 20 appearances in all competitions for the Reds after making his debut under Jurgen Klopp in 2024.

While his abilities were acknowledged by many, the club's youngest-ever player in European competition has struggled for regular minutes in the first-team.

That could be about to change, with the England Under 20 international seemingly ready to step up in the 2026/27 campaign.

Against Wrexham, Nyoni looked extremely comfortable on the ball, playing through pressure with ease and showing off a range of passing.

He was always available in possession and regularly looked forward to play through the lines to unlock his teammates in dangerous areas.

The 45-minute display was enough to wow Liverpool supporters, who feel he could be the perfect midfield metronome for Iraola's brand of football and played down the need to sign Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton.

On X, one fan said: "We have our metronome already."

A second stated: "He’s got it this kid & Iraola takes him to the next level this season."

A third added: "He’s gonna have a class season."

Liverpool are well-stocked for midfielders, with Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister and Szoboszlai still seemingly part of Iraola's plans at Anfield.

Wataru Endo is also still on the books. But Liverpool are in need of fresh legs in the middle of the park and it appears as though Iraola has big plans for Nyoni.

"Trey is very good on the ball, very calm. He reads well the situations. He's absolutely doing very well, the timings of the jumps are very good.

"He's always confident on the ball so we encourage him sometimes if we lose the ball, to try and find a No.10 or a No.9. Even balls in behind, look a bit further.

"Because he can do it because he's so good.

"At the end, he [Nyoni] is a midfielder who, I always say, you have to ask for the ball sometimes with pressure – and he doesn't feel this pressure. "Even when he has one opponent quite close, he asks for that ball and he's confident, he doesn't rush. For me, that is very valuable."

Liverpool return to action on Sunday 2 August when they take on Leeds at Soldier Field in Chicago before they host Monaco and Como in friendlies at Anfield.

Their new Premier League campaign begins against Newcastle at St James' Park on 23 August.
