BREAKING: Liverpool submit 'formal bid' to sign Japanese midfielder Wataru Endo

This came out of nowhere.

Liverpool have made an offer for Stuttgart midfielder Wataru Endo, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Jurgen Klopp is in dire need of midfield reinforcements following a number of departures in the centre of the park.

Fabinho's move to the Saudi Pro League has left the Reds without a fit and recognised No. 6, and has left the manager scrambling for alternatives in the transfer market.

The club looked to have one hand on Moises Caicedo after agreeing a £110 million fee with Brighton for the 21-year-old, but Chelsea beat them to his signature at the last minute.

Meanwhile, Liverpool transfer target Romeo Lavia looks set to follow Caicedo to Stamford Bridge after the Blues agreed a £60 million fee with Southampton on Monday.

In turn, Klopp has turned his attention to 30-year-old midfielder Endo to help solve his midfield conundrum.

That's according to Romano, who tweeted: "Liverpool submit formal bid to sign Japanese midfielder Wataru Endō on permanent deal.

"Negotiations ongoing with Stuttgart — player wants the move as it’s biggest opportunity of his career.

"Surprising move by Liverpool director Schmadtke."
