Liverpool have been linked with a shock move for Marcus Rashford after he was among five players banished from Manchester United training by Ruben Amorim.

After being unhappy with his performance levels in training back in December, Amorim quickly cast Rashford aside and he was loaned out to Aston Villa until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Rashford returned to United for pre-season after the loan was finished but he, along with unwanted stars Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia, are not allowed to train with the rest of the team and must only arrive at Carrington at 5pm.

The aforementioned quintet have all been told to find new clubs and Liverpool have emerged as a surprise destination for Rashford, a boyhood United fan and academy graduate.

The Reds have been incredibly active in the transfer market so far but are believed to be on the hunt for a new striker, with Fabrizio Romano claiming the Premier League champions are preparing an official approach to Newcastle over a club record bid for Alexander Isak.

Liverpool's Alexander Isak alternatives

£120 million is the mooted fee for Isak but Liverpool have a list of alternatives if their Isak pursuit is unsuccessful, with enquiries made about Villa's Ollie Watkins, Brentford striker Yoan Wissa, Victor Osimhen of Napoli and Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike.

They are also monitoring the situation of Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes but a shock swoop for Rashford has also been discussed and considered, as per the Daily Mail.

A report from Simon Jones claims Rashford was "floated as an idea" but he appears to be near the bottom of their shortlist as things have "not progressed so far".

A player has not moved directly from United to Liverpool in 61 years, with Phil Chisnall the last man to go between the North West rivals.

Sir Alex Ferguson refused to allow Gabriel Heinze to leave United for Liverpool in 2007 and he instead signed for Real.

Rashford's transfer fee has dropped to £40 million but one would assume major rivals Liverpool would not be able to get him for such a price.

Liverpool have splashed out on Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamardashvili but are looking to recoup money by offloading the likes of Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott.

Luis Diaz is also being heavily courted by Bayern Munich but the Reds rejected a £58 million bid.
