Ruthless fans on social media all took aim at the same Liverpool star following Danny Welbeck's sensational opener.

Brighton took just 87 seconds to open the scoring at Anfield as Welbeck produced a stunning finish.

The ball fell to him inside the box, with the former Manchester United forward smashing home to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Welbeck was presented with the opportunity after Virgil van Dijk failed to deal with the ball.

He was unable to clear the danger properly as he duelled with Jakub Moder.

Van Dijk's error led to Welbeck scoring as fans online slammed the Liverpool captain's defending in the moments leading up to the goal.

One X user exclaimed: "I speak for everyone when I say Van Dijk is the most Overrated Defender of all Time."

A second joked: "Nicely laid off by Van Dijk for the goal."

A third added: "Van Dijk with his trademark move again."

A fourth mocked: "Great assist from the best defender in PL history."

Another wrote: "Van Dijk thinking his aura was bigger than Welbeck."

Van Dijk has been in superb form this season as Liverpool mount a title charge.

But his moment of lapse in concentration cost his team a goal.

Luis Diaz, however, spared his teammate's blushes as he levelled proceedings in the 27th minute.
