Liverpool and Manchester City played out a 1-1 at Anfield on Sunday.

Fans think Manchester City star Phil Foden squared up to a Liverpool player before backing out after realising who it actually was.

On Sunday, Pep Guardiola’s men arrived at Anfield looking to climb to the top of the Premier League table with a win against Liverpool.

However, both teams left with one point after Alexis Mac Allister’s penalty cancelled out John Stones’ opener.

Liverpool were left furious after Mac Allister was denied a late spot kick after a clumsy challenge by City substitute Jeremy Doku.

In the end, Arsenal were the real winners of the weekend as they became the new leaders of this enthralling Premier League title race.

During the match at Anfield, fans were adamant Foden squared up to a Liverpool player then backed out when he realised it was Virgil van Dijk.

Reacting on social media, one fan said: “Omds Foden tried to square up and realised it was Van Dijk.”

Another tweeted: “Foden wanted to square up with the player who challenged him but then realised it was Van Dijk.”

A third fan added: “Foden wanted to stand up and fight until he realised it’s van Dijk he was up against.”

Someone else wrote: “Foden got up wanting some fight then he saw that was Van Dijk and folded really quick.”

Speaking after the match, Reds captain Van Dijk said: “I think how we reacted is good. We had very good chances [but] unfortunately we couldn't convert the winner.

“But overall, bittersweet. Based on the second half, you feel like you should have won it. But obviously they had a shot on the post as well – we can't deny [that] with their quality they could also have finished [the game] off. It's so close after the game but it's a bit bittersweet at the moment.”

Liverpool are back in action on Thursday night when they welcome Sparta Prague to Anfield for the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie.

The Reds have one foot in the next round after winning the first leg 5-1 away from home.
