The Champions League is back with all eyes on tonight's Liverpool vs Bayer Leverkusen clash as Xabi Alonso makes a long-awaited return to Anfield with the reigning Bundesliga champions.

Liverpool are looking to maintain their 100% record in this year's competition which sees them sit join-top of the league phase standings alongside domestic rivals Aston Villa while Bayer Leverkusen also remain unbeaten in this year’s competition after two wins and one draw from their opening three matches.

What to expect from Liverpool vs Bayer Leverkusen

The Reds remain without a number of their key players, with Harvey Elliott, Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa and Alisson Becker all still sidelined for the visit of Alonso's side.

Ibrahima Konate was taken off at half-time during the 2-1 win over Brighton at the weekend after suffering an arm injury but revealed that he had not suffered a significant injury in a social media update following the game.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's match, Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, said: "For us it is a big challenge to come here. Liverpool at the moment is one of the best if not the best in Europe, they are showing that in a very strong Premier League and the Champions League. It’s a good squad, good coach. At Anfield, it’s a big challenge."

Bayer Leverkusen are also missing a few players ahead of tonight's clash. Jeanuel Belocian has suffered a foot injury, Nordi Mukiele has sustained a hip injury and Amine Adli remains out with a broken leg and after such an outstanding season under Alonso last term, they find themselves fourth in the early Bundesliga standings this time round with
