Jamie Carragher issues public apology to Sky Sports viewers for comments on Liverpool player during Bournemouth win

Jamie Carragher has issued a public apology to Sky Sports viewers for comments he made on Liverpool defender Jeremy Jacquet during their victory over Bournemouth.

Alexander Isak's second-half strike was enough for Andoni Iraola's men to secure a 1-0 win over his former side and remain unbeaten after five Premier League matches.

Isak earned plaudits for scoring his third goal of the campaign, but the Reds were resilient defensively, and Jacquet's performance alongside Virgil van Dijk caught the eye again.

Jacquet was one of four signings Liverpool made to their first-team squad during the summer, joining in a £60million move from Rennes in July after agreeing a transfer on February 1.

The 21-year-old was seen as a future star at Anfield, but he has already showcased his incredible defensive talents in the early stages of his Premier League career.

The young Frenchman has started in each of their opening five league matches, including at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday, and he produced a monstrous performance.

Jacquet was excellent in possession, completing 88 per cent of his passes while demonstrating his strength defensively with six recoveries, two interceptions and two clearances.

A hulking presence alongside the experienced Van Dijk, Jacquet continued his excellent start to the season and drew immense praise from former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher live on Sky Sports.

"Am I getting carried away? I apologise to viewers at home... I've been really impressed," Carragher said. "He's young; he'll make mistakes. That's the nature of young centre-backs. But he's played very well. He also looks the part, he looks like a centre-back, looks like a good player."

Carragher apologised to viewers at home for letting his biased viewpoint take over, but the 48-year-old's praise for the defender was valid, and supporters will be hoping these mature performances continue.

Andoni Iraola's comments on Jeremy Jacquet ring true

Jacquet has hit the ground running in England's top flight, combining his excellent defensive awareness, ball-playing qualities and physical attributes to devastating effect at Anfield.

The Frenchman also has the chance to learn and develop alongside one of the world's best defenders in Van Dijk, with Iraola suggesting he has "all the tools" to be a success at Liverpool.

Speaking in July, the Spaniard said: "Jeremy was a player that I knew very well, even before signing for Liverpool.

“Still being young, I think he has all the tools that we will need for that position.

“He also came into the last months of the [past] season with a shoulder injury, but he is fully healed. He has already been training with the U21s.

“He’s ready to go from the beginning.”

Iraola said Jacquet was "ready to go" from the get-go, and those words couldn't be more true after watching him flourish in their opening five Premier League matches.
