Posting on Instagram, Salah wrote: "I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break.

"Team mates come and go but not like this. It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back.

"My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.

Three years after Salah joined the club in a deal from Roma for a for a then-club record fee of £36.9million, Jota joined from fellow Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 2020, reportedly for a £41m transfer fee.

The pair made 151 appearances together, combining for a total of 19 goals while winning the Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups.

Reports suggested that Salah has also decided to cut his holiday short in order to return to Liverpool early to be with his teammates.

As it stands, the Egyptian and his teammates will begin pre-season training on Tuesday, ahead of their first friendly against Preston North End on Sunday, but the tragic news could alter current plans.
