Arne Slot might already have his perfect Virgil van Dijk alternative, which could solve Liverpool's problem position.

It has been a stellar first season in charge of Liverpool for Dutchman Slot, who came in to replace Jurgen Klopp last summer.

So far, the Reds are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League, with a healthy 13-point lead over Arsenal.

In Europe, they face a tough assignment in the Champions League as they are set to take on French champions Paris Saint Germain in the round of 16.

However, fans remain in the dark with regards to the contract talks with the likes of Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

All three players will walk away from Anfield for free if no new terms can be agreed upon, which will be a mega blow for Slot.

But, Slot could already have an alternative to Van Dijk within his squad.

During the January transfer window, Spanish youngster Stefan Bajcetic moved to Spanish La Liga side Las Palmas on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 20-year-old impressed during a 2-0 defeat against Barcelona last month and was forced to play in an unfamiliar position on Friday night.

Against Valladolid, Bajcetic was forced to play at centre back after Las Palmas suffered two injuries and a red card.

The Spaniard impressed again with fans reacting on social media after a compilation of his performance emerged.

One fan said: "He was a CB at youth level so yeah no surprise that he can play the role really well."

Another tweeted: "He was a CB when we signed him if I remember it right. Klopp moved him into midfield."

A third fan added: "It is his best position."

With Van Dijk's future uncertain, plus Joe Gomez's poor injury record, Slot could soon have a problem at the heart of his defence.

However, if Bajcetic continues to impress, he could be able to step in at centre back if needed, which means the club could spend more money elsewhere as they bid to improve their squad in the summer.

Las Palmas are back in La Liga action next weekend when they take on Real Betis.
