Liverpool boss Arne Slot has reportedly drawn up a three-man shortlist after the club announced a major departure.

On Saturday afternoon, it was confirmed that Slot's assistant, John Heitinga, has left the club.

The 41-year-old former Everton man has departed Anfield in order to become the new head coach of Dutch side Ajax.

A club statement read: "Liverpool FC can confirm John Heitinga is to depart the club to take up the role of Ajax head coach. The 41-year-old leaves the Reds after one season in the backroom team, operating as assistant coach to Arne Slot.

"He now assumes a position in charge of former club Ajax in his native Netherlands. John leaves with our gratitude and appreciation for his role in our 2024-25 Premier League title win."

On the back of the announcement, the process of hiring a new assistant manager has already begun.

As reported by The Echo, there are already three men in the frame for the vacant role.

Marino Pusic is one of the names on the list of potential replacements for Heitinga, having worked under Slot at both AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord.

The 53-year-old will be free after he leaves Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk on the back of winning a domestic double during the 23/24 campaign.

Another man in the running is Etienne Reijnen, the current assistant manager at Slot's former side, Feyenoord.

The former Groningen and PEC Zwolle defender was touted to join Slot last summer, but the move was hampered by work permit issues.

Lastly, former Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt, who would be a popular choice among fans if he were to be chosen as Slot's new assistant.

The 44-year-old is expected to leave Belgian club Beerschot after their relegation from the Juliper Pro League.

Speaking about Heitinga last week, Slot said: "If Ajax would be smart, they would consider him. He is ready to take on a job like that. If John is smart, he would stay one more season."
