Liverpool are targeting a surprise move for a relegated Premier League star as part of Andoni Iraola's summer rebuild.
Iraola's arrival as Liverpool's new manager following the dismissal of Arne Slot is believed to be imminent, with the Spaniard poised to sign a two-year contract in line with his demand in contract talks.
Liverpool hope that Iraola's fast-paced, intense style will get the fans back on side after an underwhelming second season which ultimately saw Slot sacked just a year on from winning the club's 20th league title.
It is set to be a period of change at Anfield with the departures of Mo Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate - all on free transfers.

While further exits could well follow, there is word on potential incomings - with TEAMtalk reporting that Liverpool are in for Burnley defender Maxime Esteve.
Esteve joined the Clarets last summer for a fee of £10.3 million and impressed despite Burnley suffering immediate relegation from the Premier League.

The former Montpellier man is not short of admirers, with Chelsea and Crystal Palace said to be keeping tabs.
Liverpool also like the look of the 23-year-old, who is nailed on to leave Turf Moor after a single season.
Burnley are resigned to losing the centre-back and are reportedly ready to replace him with Middlesborough captain Dael Fry.
Andoni Iraola's top Liverpool transfer targets revealed
According to a report from ESPN, Liverpool have a five-player shortlist for players they are looking to sign this summer.
They are desperate to bring in an elite winger, with Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola leading candidates for the position.
Both players appear to be attainable, while West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen has also been mentioned as another player who has suffered relegation to the Championship.
Inter Milan Right-back Denzel Dumfries was briefly mentioned before agreeing to sign for Real Madrid.
However the Reds are also looking to acquire a midfielder who can get them playing and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton would appear to fit the bill perfectly.
Liverpool splashed out £446 million on new recruits after winning the Premier League title but could only manage a fifth-placed finish as the new additions failed to settle in.
That needs to change this time around, with Iraola linking up with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes once again after working alongside one another at Bournemouth.
Iraola has landed in Liverpool and according to Fabrizio Romano, the ex Bournemouth coach has put pen to paper on a deal until 2028.
