Liverpool complete new signing just days after transfer window closes

Liverpool have completed the signing of Djylian N'Guessan on a pre-contract agreement from Saint-Etienne, days after the deadline.

The Reds ended the summer transfer window with six new signings, with four of them immediately slotting into Andoni Iraola's first-team squad, including Bradley Barcola, Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz and Ronald Araujo.

Iraola's other two captures - centre-back Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who joined from Austria Vienna, and Lucca Brughmans, a £30million goalkeeper from Genk - are seen as future prospects at Anfield.

Liverpool sign Djylian N'Guessan after transfer window closes

Ndukwe will spend the campaign on loan at LaLiga side Levante, while Brughmans - who became the most expensive teenage goalkeeper with his transfer to Merseyside - has returned to the Belgian Pro League outfit for the season.

Encouragingly, Liverpool have since added a third player with huge potential, having completed the signing of French forward Djylian N'Guessan on a pre-contract agreement from Saint-Etienne.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the Reds will pay the Ligue 2 team £4.3.million for the 18-year-old's signature, and he will spend the campaign on loan at Stade Brest in Ligue 1.

N'Guessan will officially arrive at Anfield in January and join Iraola's squad, but the club will review his situation at the turn of the year ahead of another possible loan move.

Liverpool spotted N'Guessan playing at the U17 Euros in Albania, where he was named in the team of the tournament, and he represents another brilliant coup from head of global talent, Matt Newberry, who has signed several teenage prospects in recent years.

What people have said about Djylian N'Guessan

At just the age of 18, N'Guessan has already experienced the physical demands of first-team football, making eight Ligue 1 appearances as Saint-Etienne suffered relegation to Ligue 2 in 2024/25.

The France under-20 international has since played three times in the second tier and scored his first senior goal last season during a Coupe de France clash against AS Quetigny in November 2025.

Clearly a talented, young forward with incredible potential, N'Guessan is rated highly by those who have worked closely with him, and he's previously drawn comparisons to Hugo Ekitike and Atletico Madrid loanee Jonathan David - players who are skillful and good finishers, but who are also capable of dropping deeper to link play.

Speaking to The Guardian for their Next Gen series in October 2025, the teenager's former coach, Lionel Rouxel, said: "He’s a player with two characteristics for the top level: he plays deep and moves quite well between the lines,” Rouxel said.

“Djylian is also a box player who has progressed and is becoming a goalscorer.”

He is also the son of the ex-Leicester City, Lincoln, and Millwall forward Dany N'Guessan, who made almost 300 professional appearances before retiring in 2017.

What makes N'Guessan even more appealing to Iraola is his versatility, having already proven he can operate on either flank as well as centrally.
