News of a surprise club coming out of nowhere to make an enquiry for Alexander Isak emerged after Liverpool's rejected bid.

The saga involving the wantaway Swede has dominated headlines in recent times and on Friday, Liverpool finally tabled an offer for Isak following an initial approach.

The bid was widely reported to be a flat £110 million as Liverpool looked to continue their mammoth spending spree following the additions of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Hugo Ekitike.

However, Newcastle immediately turned down the proposal and still hope there is a way for their talisman to remain at St James' Park even with his clear desire to leave.

Shortly after the bid, it was reported by a number of outlets that Liverpool would not be raising their offer and were prepared to walk away from a potential deal.

But in a sock detail, Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany claims that Manchester United have been monitoring the situation and made contact over an incredibly ambitious swoop.

United, who are rivalling Newcastle for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, were knocked back by Isak as he only wants to sign for the Premier League champions.

The journalist stated that Isak has agreed terms with Liverpool for a contract until 2031 but Newcastle are still playing hardball and do not wish to sell.

While they hope they can come to a compromise that means Isak leads the line again for the upcoming season, it has been reported that his representatives have optimism that a transfer can still be arranged.

Isak has not been with Newcastle for their pre-season tour because of what the club say is a "minor thigh issue" and has instead been training alone at former club Real Sociedad.

After Anthony Gordon spoke about the situation involving his teammate, manager Eddie Howe provided an update at a recent press conference in Seoul.

"I know where he is, really, through the media," Howe said.

“From that perspective, it’s difficult for me to go into any kind of detail. The situation is far from ideal and is quite complex."

“I was made aware of a bid yesterday (Friday) and that bid was turned down, all before I’d even heard about it.

"People back in England are dealing with the situation. I don’t know what happens next. From our perspective, we still support Alex in every way and my wish is that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.”
