Fans spotted an error in a social media post shared by Joey Barton which called out Eni Aluko, Michael Owen and others.

Over recent weeks, the former Manchester City and Burnley midfielder has sent a barrage of controversial posts and personal attacks centring around his views on female pundits working in men's football.

ITV published a statement in support and defence of Aluko and Lucy Ward after they were described as 'the Fred and Rose West of football commentary' by Barton.

Aluko confirmed in an Instagram post on Tuesday that she has sought legal action over Barton's comments - although did not specify which ones - and added that she has 'genuinely been scared'.

The former Chelsea and England star also confirmed she has left the country in recent days, having been scared to leave the house in the days before then, as part of a lengthy 15-minute video.

After watching Aluko's video and then re-sharing it on his own X (Twitter) page, Barton doubled down on previous criticisms of the pundit.

The 41-year-old subsequently posted a poll to the social media platform, asking users to vote on who they believed is the worst pundit on men's football.

He gave a total of four options for users to choose from - Aluko, Garth Crooks, Alan Shearer and his former Newcastle team-mate Michael Owen.

One fan quickly spotted that Barton had made a typo on Crooks' first name, calling the former Stoke, West Brom and Charlton forward as Gareth.

Several others also picked up on the typo before calling out the former England midfielder.

One said: "Often criticises female pundits for making mistakes. Does a poll to see who the worst pundit is. Spells Garth Crooks' name wrong."

Another asked: "Who's Gareth Crooks?"

A third said: "Gareth, no idea who that is. I know a Garth Crooks mind you."
