Chelsea teenager Jesse Derry was handed his full Premier League debut on Monday, joining at least 33 players who have followed in their father's footsteps by playing in the competition.

The 18-year-old winger, who joined Chelsea from boyhood club Crystal Palace last summer, was handed a first senior start by interim head coach Callum McFarlane.

With both Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto missing from the squad, Derry impressed in the opening stages against Nottingham Forest and won a penalty with a minute remaining of the first half.

But while doing so, he was left needing oxygen after a nasty clash of heads with Forest defender Zach Abbott. After play was stopped for more than ten minutes, the youngster was stretchered off the pitch.

Away from the injury, Jesse followed in the footsteps of his dad Shaun, who made 53 appearances in the Premier League, with 47 of those coming for Queens Park Rangers between 2011 and 2013.

This season, a handful of players have followed their dad into England's top flight, including twin brothers Jack and Tyler Fletcher, the sons of former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher.

Other examples include West Ham's Freddie Potts, whose father, Steve, and brother, Dan, also represented the Hammers, not to mention Leeds' Gabriel Gudmundsson, the son of former Blackburn forward Niklas Gudmundsson.

Father and sons to play in the Premier League

In total, at least 33 players have followed in their father’s footsteps by playing in the Premier League.

Ian Wright and Shaun Wright-Phillips became the first father-son duo to both win the title, before Peter and Kasper Schmeichel became the second father-son duo to both win the league.
