Jamie Carragher questioned Jadon Sancho’s “ability” when discussing Manchester United’s worst signings.
Last week, Sancho completed a deadline day move to Aston Villa on loan, with the Birmingham club reportedly agreeing to pay 80 per cent of the winger’s wages.
The 25-year-old signed for Manchester United for £73m from Borussia Dortmund back in 2021, but has since struggled to have an impact at Old Trafford. He spent last term on loan at Chelsea, but returned to United after the Blues paid a £5m penalty to get out of their obligation to buy the player.
When discussing United’s worst signings in recent season, former Liverpool defender Carragher said: “It’s funny with Sancho because he got his reputation from his time at Borussia Dortmund.
“I always go back to, me and Gary [Neville] were on Sky for a show, and they asked us to pick an England squad.

“We hadn’t seen Sancho play too much - he was at Dortmund and doing really well in the Champions League - and we didn’t put him in our squad - and I remember on social media, everyone was saying, ‘How could you not put in Sancho?' Everyone was just in on Sancho.
“And when we’re discussing the worst Manchester United signings, I’m not sure there’s much ability there. He’s okay. I don’t understand what his thing is.
“I’ve been critical of Marcus Rashford, but when I picture Marcus Rashford playing well I can picture his pace, I can picture his shot, I can picture him taking a free-kick and hitting a ball really hard.

“I don’t know what Sancho’s thing is. Every play has something - you might not like certain things - I can’t think in my head what Sancho does.”
When it was put to Carragher that Sancho had built a reputation on dribbling in tight spaces, the former Liverpool defender responded: “I’ve never seen it in my life.”
Paul Scholes added: “[Aston Villa manager Unai] Emery might be good for Sancho. But I think it’s a weird signing. We talked before about size of the pitch but Villa Park is massive [especially if you have] a lack of pace, a lack of legs. It concerns you.

“As Jamie said, what’s his strength? Does he cut inside and smash it in the top corner? Can he beat a man? Does he link? He possibly links with the centre-forward, plays nice passes down the side of people.”
