Gary Lineker names England star most likely to replace him as Match of the Day host

Gary Lineker names England star most likely to replace him as Match of the Day host

Gary Lineker talked up the Manchester United man.

Gary Lineker has named a current football star as a potential replacement for him on Match of the Day.

The former Barcelona and Tottenham forward has been in the MOTD hot seat since 1999 when he replaced Des Lynham.

And during the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards threw around some names that could host the legendary BBC football show.

Shearer mentioned James Maddison, saying: "I think James Maddison because I think he talks really, really well."

To which the Leicester City legend replied: "He’s very eloquent and he’s very good tactically. I think he’s the best of the players in the post-match interview."

Richards went for a 'left field' shout, opting for former Liverpool and Everton defender Conor Coady, who joined Leicester during the summer transfer window.

He said: "A little bit left field, but Conor Coady.

"In terms of people want strikers, but I’m going with a defender. He knows the game really well, speaks really good. I’ve worked with him on Match of the Day and he’s done Sky as well."

The Newcastle United hero then name-dropped Kasper Schmeichel as Lineker hailed Mason Mount, Phil Foden and Ryan Sessegnon before talking up the Manchester United midfielder.

Lineker continued: "Kasper Schmeichel as a goalkeeper, very good. His dad’s done lots of punditry, that’s not a bad shout. Can you remember Alan, when we did the World Cup in Moscow and there were three young footballers?

"It was Mason Mount, Phil Foden and Ryan Sessegnon," he added. "They came to watch us do the TV shows. And Mason Mount sat in my chair and was doing a few things to camera, and he wasn’t too bad.

"Who knows, maybe Mason Mount, we’ll see."

Will Mount host MOTD after his playing days are over? Let us know what you think.
