Exactly what Nicolas Otamendi said to Rodri has emerged following the pair's verbal exchange after the 2026 World Cup final.

Ferran Torres’ extra-time strike secured Spain’s 1-0 victory, crowning the nation world champions for just the second time.

Argentina were heavily criticised throughout the match for using the so-called ‘dark arts’ as they attempted to stop Spain’s flowing passing football.

This worked well until the 93rd minute, when an overenthusiastic Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card for a mistimed tackle on Pau Cubarsi.

In extra time, the South Americans sat in a low block as the Europeans piled on the pressure.

Eventually, Spain broke the deadlock in the 106th minute when Nico Williams’ headed cut-back was smashed home by Torres to secure victory.

Shortly after the full-time whistle, Leandro Paredes was sent off following an ugly clash with Eric Garcia and Gavi, with the midfielder grabbing Garcia by the throat before wrestling Gavi to the ground.

“Paredes threw two or three haymakers into someone's face. He went for them,” Alan Shearer said on the BBC. “There is no place or space for that.

“We know how much it means to them and we know how much it hurts to lose, but there is a way to lose. Too many times, we have seen that from Argentina. The reaction after the final whistle is terrible.”

Wayne Rooney added: “It doesn't surprise me, I think we've seen this with Argentina before, and it's just not the reaction you want.

"We've seen some of the reaction after knocking England out in the last round as well. I think Enzo Fernandez has got what he deserves as well, so it's disappointing.

"But that's just sad. If you lose a game of football, be graceful and get out of there. It's very poor from them."

It also appeared that Nahuel Molina tried to swing a punch towards Rodri, who then squared up to him, causing Garcia to get involved. After several players and members of staff became involved, the situation diffused.

Paredes, who was booked in the final and continued to commit several fouls, somehow avoiding a second caution, was eventually sent off for his post-match antics.

But the drama was not over, as Rodri and Otamendi appeared to exchange views on the pitch after the match.

The pair engaged in an animated conversation, with reports claiming Otamendi accused Rodri and Spain teammate Aymeric Laporte of influencing the referee with their comments in the build-up to the clash.

"Start talking less, idiot. You guys spent the whole week crying,” Otamendi said, according to Marca.

"You spent the whole week crying. You and Laporte, both of you. That's not how it's done. You were crying to the referees all week, my friend."

Rodri appeared shocked and asked the defender what he meant before Otamendi continued: "Laporte? Didn't you see what he said this week?"

What did Laporte say that annoyed Otamendi?

Laporte, who plays his club football at Athletic Club, suggested he was not worried about Argentina’s physicality ahead of the match, claiming he had “no problem” with it “if the referee does his job”.

The defender said: "It's true that in recent matches we've seen things that have surprised us, situations that have been allowed to go unpunished. Especially with Argentina, which is a team that likes to leave little messages with its challenges. That shouldn't be allowed in football, particularly in tournaments of this magnitude, because it can unsettle you and make you lose your composure."

He added: "It's the referee's job to keep the game under control so the match doesn't get away from him. If one or two players are allowed to do what they want, the game will become chaotic. Since the tournament began, we have been a fair team in that regard.”
