Iran have demanded that FIFA take action over Donald Trump's recent World Cup threat amid the ongoing conflict between the two countries.

Last week, US President Trump warned that Iranian player's "life and safety” could be at risk if they travel to compete in the World Cup, set to be held across North America this summer.

As it stands, Iran have been drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt, with their opening game set to take place in the early hours of June 16.

However, the ongoing conflict across the Middle East has raised questions regarding Iran's participation in the World Cup this summer, prompting Trump's comments.

But Iran has revealed that it is in talks with FIFA over demands that would allow them to ensure their safety throughout the competition.

Alongside the USA, neighbours Mexico and Canada are also hosting several matches during the World Cup this summer.

And following Trump's warning, the Iran embassy in Mexico has said that they want their games to be held in the country instead of the US.

"When Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America,' Mehdi Taj, the President of the Iranian Football Federation said, via the Daily Mail.

"We are currently negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran's matches in the World Cup in Mexico."

However, it is believed that FIFA are reluctant to reschedule games with the competition set to begin in less than 100 days.

Taj's statement comes after he appeared to confirm that the Iran national team would boycott the World Cup after air strikes killed the country's supreme leader.

Meanwhile Iran Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamal claimed that there are "no conditions under which we can participate", suggesting there was "no possibility" that they will feature at the tournament.

"Since this corrupt government assassinated our leader, we have no conditions under which we can participate in the World Cup,' Ahmad Donyamal said in a television interview.

"In view of the malicious measures taken against Iran, two wars were forced upon us within eight or nine months, and several thousand of our people were killed. Therefore, we definitely have no possibility of participating in this way."

If Iran are unable to compete at the World Cup, it is currently believed that the United Arab Emirates are the most likely team that would take their place in the competition.
