Fans call for Newcastle player to be banned by the FA after 'shocking' moment vs Tottenham

Fans have called for the FA to ban Yoane Wissa after his 'shocking' moment in Newcastle United's clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Magpies continued their promising start under new manager Matthias Jaissle with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham, six days after securing a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at St James' Park.

New signing Nico Gonzalez made his Newcastle debut after completing his £52 million move from Manchester City, but it was the attacking duo of Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa who stole the show with their performances.

Elanga opened the scoring for the second weekend running after seeing his left-footed effort ricochet off the post and into the net before Wissa doubled their lead with an acrobatic effort 10 minutes later.

Spurs were undone by the Toon's incisive attacking play, and Wissa was a constant thorn in Roberto De Zerbi's side, as he finally showcased why he was signed in a £55 million deal from Brentford last summer.

The 29-year-old has looked like a man reborn under Jaissle after struggling to recapture his form at the Bees last term. In fact, the DR Congo international already has the same number of goal involvements in the Premier League for the Magpies this season in 17 fewer games.

Wissa's incredible energy, pressing, and quality in the final third were a joy to watch, but his performance was soured by one avoidable moment when he successfully deceived referee Peter Bankes.

The Newcastle forward blatantly dived and rolled to the ground under no contact from Spurs midfielder Mateus Fernandes and was awarded a free kick for a 'foul', which prompted an understandably angry response from the Portuguese star.

Footage of Wissa taking a tumble has since gone viral online, with many feeling that the FA should dish out a ban to the Toon No. 9 for cheating.

"If the FA had a backbone they'd ban Wissa for the next game, shocking dive. But they get away with it week in week out," one fan wrote.

"Him and VAR literally saved you from a blatant penalty. Missed the most obvious free kick on Porro. Awarded Wissa a foul for the worst dive ever. How are you guys crying about the ref?" someone else questioned.

"Wild that Wissa doesn’t get booked for the biggest dive you’ll see all year," a third pointed out.

"This has nothing to do with it being Newcastle, but this should be a ban based on what happened with Heggebo. You can’t pick and choose with punishments based on what their outcome was," another said, comparing the incident to West Brom striker Aune Heggebo, who was handed a two-match ban for "successful deception of a match official" under Rule E3.1.

The incident happened during the Baggies' 2-1 win over Norwich City earlier this month, when Heggebo used his arm to deflect a cross into the net for a goal and the majority felt the punishment was harsh.

In Wissa's case, FA rules state that players can be retrospectively banned for diving, but only if they deceive an official. That usually applies to instances when a dive leads directly to a penalty kick or a direct red/second yellow card for an opponent.

As Fernandes didn't concede a penalty or wasn't given a yellow card for the incident, a ban is unlikely, but if he did, then Wissa would be facing a two-match suspension.
