Fans confused by Ballon d'Or rankings after Emiliano Martinez wins Yashin Trophy

Fans confused by Ballon d'Or rankings after Emiliano Martinez wins Yashin Trophy

They are confused.

Fans were confused after Emiliano Martinez claimed the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or ceremony.

Argentina and Aston Villa star Martinez was voted the best keeper in the world during the Ballon d'Or ceremony at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, France after his heroics at the World Cup.

The shot-stopper, who helped his country claim their first World Cup trophy since 1986 in Qatar, was presented the award by his father.

And there was a frosty reception when Martinez was asked about his show-stopping save in the World Cup final against France.

The boos from certain quarters even required presenter Didier Drogba to interrupt Martinez and call on the audience to show the award winner the respect he deserved.

The victory also led to some confusion online, given Martinez won the award despite having been ranked 15th in the Ballon d'Or winners list, two places below fellow goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

On X, the social media platform formally known as Twitter, one person said: "bono is 13th and martinez 15th how does this make any sense."

Another wrote: "Martinez won the Yachine trophy but Bono finished higher than him in the Ballon d'Or rankings.

"This ceremony is becoming a bigger joke every year."

A third added: "How is it that Yassine Bounou is a better player than Emiliano Martinez ( Higher in ranking on Ballon D'or) but Martinez is a better goalkeeper than Bono?? It just dosen't make sense to me."

A fourth wrote: "Martinez won but Bono had a higher Ballon Dor ranking things we love to see."

A fifth said: "These people could of at least put an effort to hide the robbery

"Bono ranked higher than Emi Martinez in the Ballon d’Or but he finishes higher than him in Yashin award."
