Real Madrid and Chelsea legend Claude Makelele hailed him as his 'favourite' player.

Claude Makelele has seemingly settled the Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard debate as he has named his 'favourite' ever player.

The Gerrard, Scholes and Lampard debate continues to rage on as footballers past and present share their thoughts on the legendary midfielders.

Gerrard, Scholes and Lampard enjoyed iconic spells at Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea respectively at the peak of their powers.

Brazil legend Kaka, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2007, delivered his verdict as he named the three England players that he thinks he would've thrived alongside.

Makelele, who played for Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain during his distinguished career, has also shared his thoughts on the Gerrard, Scholes and Lampard debate.

Speaking to Rio Ferdinand, he hailed Red Devils icon Scholes, calling him his 'favourite' ever player.

"Many people talk like I'm aggressive... no... I play football," he told Ferdinand, who replied: "Paul Scholes says that."

Makelele responded: "I love him. He's my favourite."

Asked why he loves Scholes, the Frenchman added: "He's like me; fighter, technique, brain. This kind of guy needs to come back to Manchester United. Give an answer to the young players. You can't lose these kinds of people."

Makelele and Scholes had many battles on the pitch, including a famous clash at the 2008 Champions League final in Moscow, Russia.

The defensive midfielder broke Scholes' nose but he continued and played the full match, including extra-time.

Scholes got the better of Makelele that night as Man United beat Chelsea on penalties to win the Champions League.

He won two Champions League titles during his illustrious career, having also won it in 1999 as part of his side's treble-winning campaign.

Scholes played an impressive 718 games for Man United and won 11 Premier League titles.
