What happened when Inter Milan returned to Italy following their 5-0 Champions League final defeat against PSG was absolutely brutal.

Inter Milan were out-thought and out-fought by deserved winners Paris Saint-Germain in a one-sided affair in Munich, Germany, on Saturday evening.

A Desire Doue brace and strikes from Achraf Hakimi, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and teenager Senny Mayulu helped Luis Enrique’s side become only the second French club – after Marseille - to win Europe’s premier club competition.

On Sunday, the trophy will be paraded through the streets of the French capital, with the players due to meet France’s President Macron.

But the mood around Milan could not be further from that of Paris, unless you’re an AC Milan fan, of course.

Inter returned to Italy and flew into Milan’s Malpensa airport on Sunday and were met by just one supporter named Marco, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I’m the only idiot…” Marco supposedly said, but still insisted the team deserved applause.

As you may expect, the mood was eerie, and the squad walked quietly between the terminal and the bus, which was waiting for them.

Not only did they sustain a record defeat in a Champions League final, but the side also missed out on the Scudetto, despite being in control with just weeks to go.

It is unclear whether head coach Simone Inzaghi will remain in charge.

"We'll see in the next few days with the club," Inzaghi said after the defeat.

"After a final like this - the second one lost in three years - there's too much disappointment to try to think. There will be time to talk about it calmly with my club, which was with us again tonight and is always present."

Club president Giuseppe Marotta insisted that the result would not impact the coach’s future.

"We are meeting with the coach because this club is not used to letting a manager go into the final year of his contract," added Marotta.

"There is no revolution under way. We will meet to hear what he has to say - I repeat, on our part, we are very proud and honoured to continue with him."
