With the group stage of the 23/24 Champions League at an end, the attention will now switch towards the round of 16.

On Tuesday night, Manchester United became the first English side to be eliminated from this season's competition after they lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s men were eliminated from Europe altogether after finishing bottom of Group A.

On Wednesday night, Newcastle United’s Champions League campaign also came to an end after they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Serie A side AC Milan in front of a packed-out St. James’ Park.

In the other game, Paris Saint Germain drew 1-1 with Borussia Dortmund and therefore finished second in Group F.

Like United, Newcastle will not be playing any European football in the new year after they finished bottom of the group.

Ahead of the round of 16 draw, which will take place on Monday in Nyon, Switzerland, we have had a look at which teams English sides could be drawn against.

Having clinched the top spot in their respective groups, City and Arsenal will be drawn against one of the teams that finished second.

Manchester City

Possible round of 16 opponents - Copenhagen, PSV Eindhoven, Napoli, Inter Milan, Lazio, Paris Saint Germain, Porto

Pep Guardiola’s men could be handed a repeat of last season’s final as there is the possibility that they could be drawn against Italian giants Inter.

Copenhagen, who shocked the likes of United and Galatasaray, will be the easiest tie on paper.

Arsenal

Possible round of 16 opponents - Copenhagen, Napoli, Inter Milan, Lazio, Paris Saint Germain, RB Leipzig, Porto

In their first Champions League appearance since the 16/17 season, Arsenal will go into the round of 16 as one of the favourites to go all the way.

Similar to City, their toughest draw could be Inter or PSG and the easiest is Copenhagen.
