Martin Odegaard's key Kai Havertz decision in Bournemouth rout proves his leadership credentials

Martin Odegaard's key Kai Havertz decision in Bournemouth rout proves his leadership credentials

The German scored his first goal for the Gunners.

Kai Havertz scored his first goal for Arsenal after a difficult start to his life at the Gunners in the 4-0 Premier League demolition of Bournemouth.

The German international made the summer switch from Chelsea as part of a huge turnover of players at Stamford Bridge, moving across London to the Emirates Stadium.

However, the 24-year-old, who transferred for a reported £65million fee to bolster Arsenal's forward line, has struggled for form since his switch to Mikel Arteta's side and was yet to find the back of the net.

That changed yesterday though at the Vitality Stadium after Havertz broke his duck from the spot.

Bukayo Saka netted before 20 minutes to give Arsenal the lead, which the Gunners then doubled before the break courtesy of Martin Odegaard from the penalty spot.

The Gunners won a second penalty not long after half-time which Havertz duly scored to net his first Arsenal goal, before Ben White's injury time header ensured an emphatic three points for Arteta's men.

Arsneal now sit third in the table, just a point behind league leaders Manchester City, who fell to a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth.

Though Havertz did manage to score his penalty, it seems he was not first choice to take the spot-kick.

Indeed, Odegaard's intervention led to the German being handed the responsibility.

Footage has shown that Gabriel Jesus was the one originally due to take the spot kick, but Odegaard spoke to the Brazilian international and convinced him pass the opportunity on to his new team-mate.

It led to Havertz being given the ball and duly scoring.

Havertz will hope it is the start of a run of form for him in front of goal, but what a great act from Gunners skipper Odegaard and fair play to Jesus for giving up the chance of adding another goal to his tally.
