Former Chelsea midfielder Ramires has revealed it was the club's idea for John Terry to wear his full kit at the 2012 Champions League final.

Terry didn't play in the final due to suspension but he got everybody talking when he emerged on the pitch at the Allianz Arena in full kit following Chelsea's victory.

But Ramires, who now plies his trade at Palmeiras, has defended his former captain and admitted it wasn't his choice to make.

"All of us changed post-match," the Brazilian told FourFourTwo. "The idea came from the club, because they wanted everyone ready for the team photo."

The admission is unlikely to end the full kit meme that has been a constant staple on social media over the last eight years, but it's nice to finally have the complete story.

Ramires was an unsung hero in that Champions League triumph, being the man who scored the all important away goal in the semi-final second leg draw against Barcelona.

He also missed the final due to an accumulation of bookings while Terry was given a red card for a foul on Alexis Sanchez.

The 33-year-old discussed how hard it was watching the final against Bayern Munich knowing he couldn't play.

"I was really nervous! I kicked things," he continued. "I screamed, I cursed. When Bayern scored, it was past the 80th minute and some fans started to take the p***.

"But when Drogba scored, let's say we had revenge. It was a happiness explosion! Terry stood up on the seat to celebrate.

"When it came to Drogba for the last penalty I was very confident - he was our best taker. We were over the moon at full-time."

Terry did callback to his full-kit incident on Instagram last month - while participating in the toilet roll challenge.

The challenge has taken over the footballing world as stars self-isolate following the COVID 19/coronavirus outbreak.

Terry could have produced the best of the lot however with his volley.

As the Champions League anthem echoes in the background, 'JT' takes aim and slots a toilet roll straight into the trophy.

The 39-year-old captioned the post with: 'I was going to put my kit on but I couldn't find my shin pads.'
