The Football Association has been charged with four offences by UEFA following the chaotic scenes at the Euro 2020 final at Wembley on Sunday.

The showpiece event between England and Italy was married beforehand by violence both inside and outside the stadium.

Prior to kick-off, fans without tickets overwhelmed stewards and stormed several entrances at Wembley, leading to fighting on the concourses.

Large numbers of fans also reported that their seats had been taken by intruders, which sparked heated exchanges inside the stadium. The son of Italy coach Roberto Mancini was even forced to watch the first half on Wembley's steps after his seat was taken by ticketless fans.

The FA had already been fined £25,630 for crowd problems, including the shining of a laser pointer at Kasper Schmeichel, during England's semi-final win over Denmark at Wembley.

Now they have been charged with four offences including a pitch invader, an object being thrown from the crowd at Leonardo Bonucci, 'disturbance' during Italy's national anthem and the lighting of flares by supporters inside the stadium.

UEFA has also confirmed that a disciplinary investigation is under way following the violence between England supporters.

A statement released by UEFA read: "Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the Euro 2020 final.

"Charges against The English Football Association:

• Invasion of the field of play by its supporters - Article 16(2)(a) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR)

• Throwing of objects by its supporters - Article 16(2)(b) DR

• Disturbance caused by its supporters during the national anthem - Article 16(2)(g) DR

• Lighting of a firework by its supporters - Article 16(2)(c) DR

"The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) in due course.

"Separately, and in accordance with Article 31(4) DR, a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation into events involving supporters which occurred inside and around the stadium.

"Information on this matter will be made available in due course."

Despite the widespread violence at Wembley, the FA insists that security measures 'exceeded the requirements for the match'.

"We will carry out a full review and investigation into the events that took place at Wembley Stadium before and during the final," an FA statement said.

"This will be done in collaboration with the Police, the Greater London Authority, the Safety Advisory Group and the tournament delivery stakeholders.

"Security and stewarding numbers for the Euro 2020 final exceeded the requirements for the match and were greater than any other previous event at Wembley Stadium.

"However, the behaviour of the people who illegally forced their way into the stadium was unacceptable, dangerous and showed a total disregard for the safety and security protocols in place.

"No steward or security staff should be subjected to this type of behaviour and we thank them for their support in the night.

"We also apologise to anyone at the match whose experience was affected by this unprecedented level of public disorder.

"We will continue to work with the relevant authorities to identify and take action against these people where possible."
