Federico Valverde’s shot ended up on the balcony of someone’s apartment last night

Real Madrid lost their first La Liga game of the season against Rayo Vallecano on Monday night.

Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde smashed a ball so high over the crossbar against Rayo Vallecano that it ended up on the balcony of someone's apartment.

After an impressive start to the La Liga campaign, Los Blancos suffered their first league defeat of the season on Monday night.

Goals from Santi Comesana, Alvaro Rivera and Oscar Trejo sealed a historic win for Andoni Iraola's resilient Vallecano side, and fans inside the Estadio de Vallecas were overjoyed when referee Juan Martínez Munuera blew the full-time whistle.

In fact, a select few outside the 14,000 capacity stadium were celebrating not only three points, but a matchball from the game. You can see the footage of that hilarious incident below.

Valverde, who has been in scintillating form this season, scoring four goals in his last season games for Madrid, couldn't keep his effort down and as a result, three lads on the balcony of a residential building reaped the rewards.

The 24-year-old Uruguay international was visibly disappointed by his efforts but up above, those on the balcony looked delighted after claiming their prize.

One fan commented on the clip, saying: "Brooo I would die of happiness if Valverde kicked the ball into my balcony," while another wrote: "I've never seen anything like this before."

A third said: "Not a chance you'd give that ball back."

Around an hour later and Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was far from happy with his team's efforts against Rayo Vallecano, who are currently eighth in the La Liga standings.

"We lacked determination of the rival, lost individual duels, could not get our play going," he told reporters. "We have played too many games, same as most teams, we’re not as fresh as we were, we lacked legs today."

He added: “I think the players were focused and tried their best."

At one stage, Los Blancos were 2-1 up thanks to goals from Luka Modric and Eder Militao. But they looked tired in the second-half and Vallecano pounced.

Ancelotti won't be too concerned by Valverde's wayward effort on Monday. Earlier in the season, the Italian made a joke that he should retire if he is unable to make the midfielder score more than 10 goals.

“I made a bet, but I think he’ll score more than 10 this season," he said. “If he scores four more then I get to keep my coaching license! He keeps surprising us. He does well on the wing or in midfield.”

Ancelotti added: “There aren’t any other bets other than with Valverde. It was strange to me how with such a good shot he only scored one last year. He has a lot of confidence, so it’s normal that he scores so many from outside the box.

“His shooting is tremendous, almost like that of Asensio. He is showing a good level, I don’t want to up the bet because I’ll seriously risk my card. I’ll stick to ten [goals]. We are all happy for Federico. He is a good person.”

Only two more goals to go, Federico.
