Fans are so confused after Bruno Guimaraes avoids red card following VAR review

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes was only handed a yellow card for the tackle on Boubakary Soumare.

Fans are convinced that Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes should have seen red for a reckless challenge on Leicester's Boubakary Soumare.

In the eighth minute of Monday night's Premier League clash at St James' Park, Brazil international Guimaraes caught Soumare's leg with a dangerously-high tackle.

The Leicester player was left in agony on the ground but despite appeals from those wearing blue, referee Andre Marriner deemed the collision a yellow card offence.

In fact, VAR official Darren England checked the foul moments later but the outcome remained. What do you think? Should this have been a red card?

Many fans on social media were adamant that Guimaraes should have been sent for an early bath.

One commented: "Should be red for Bruno Guimarães. No doubt about it. Referee should be sent to the monitor at the very least. Ridiculous the VAR officials were so quick to decide that yellow was correct punishment."

Another wrote: "How is Bruno Guimaraes still on the pitch? Nothing wrong with VAR, it's the people making the decisions," while a third said: "How on earth can VAR look at that and say no red card for Bruno Guimaraes?! Madness."

A fourth wrote: "The officiating in this league is laughable. Casemiro got sent off for winning the ball a few months ago. Bruno Guimaraes purposely studs Soumare in the knee and the referee doesn't even get sent to the monitor."

A fifth added: "I literally don't understand the rules anymore."

It is a decision that could prove vital in Leicester's battle to avoid relegation.

After Guimaraes avoided a straight red for his actions, he completed triple the amount of more final third passes (21) than the entire Leicester team combined inside that first 45 minutes.

The Foxes currently sit 18th in the Premier League ladder with one game remaining.

Let us know your thoughts on the incident in our comments section. This could get interesting.
