Europa Conference League to have a name change after its third season

Europa Conference League to have a name change after its third season

West Ham United will be only one of three Europa Conference League winners with the competition set to change name.

The Europa Conference League is set for a big change after next season, meaning they'll only be one more winner after West Ham United.

Earlier this month David Moyes led West Ham to their first European success since 1965, as they defeated Fiorentina in the final thanks to Jarrod Bowen's late winner.

The goal led to the famous song about the forward having a grand old time with Danny Dyer's daughter to ring out around the streets of London and Czechia, something Dyer himself clearly doesn't mind.

Some even believed that the trophy win made the Hammers have a better season than London rivals Arsenal, despite the Gunners second place finish in the league.

They were only the second winners of the competition after it was introduced in 2021 as the third tier competition to give lesser sides a chance at success.

The competition has perhaps been fiercer than first thought it might be with Serie A side Roma capturing the first title, allowing Jose Mourinho to get a unique tattoo, followed by Premier League West Ham.

Perhaps acknowledging how big the competition has become, UEFA are changing its name to no longer be under the 'Europa' banner and it'll now be named the UEFA Conference League.

"Introduced under the ‘Europa’ umbrella at the start of the 2021-24 commercial cycle, the new competition has quickly established itself amongst a broad audience after two successful seasons," UEFA said following their executive committee meeting in Nyon.

"Research amongst fans as well as commercial partners has found that removing ‘Europa’ from the name of the competition will enable further development as a stand-alone competition and this proposed change was approved by the UEFA Executive Committee. It will be effective in the new cycle, as of the 2024-25 season.

“Together with the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Conference League will continue to deliver ‘Thursday Night Football’ to fans across Europe and beyond.

"A strong link between the competitions will remain in place as both brand identities will remain very close, and both competitions will continue to be sold to broadcast partners and sponsors together."

One of the issues for fans for last season's final was the number of tickets available, with the Fortuna Stadium only holding 19,500.

That shouldn't be a problem going forward with the 2024 stadium set to take place in the Agia Sophia Stadium in Athens, which will fit 31,100.

The following season it will be in the Stadion Wrocław in Poland, whose capacity is 45,105.
