After just one game, Erik ten Hag has broken a long standing record after Brighton managed a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

Graham Potter’s side came out victorious thanks to a brace from midfielder Pascal Gross, this victory is the first ever win that Brighton have managed at Manchester United’s home ground, Old Trafford.

An unwanted record for Ten Hag as he subsequently became the first manager in the club’s rich history to falter at home against the Seagulls.

After a largely positive pre season, United fans were expecting their team to easily brush Brighton away, but things did not turn out like that at all.

From the get go, it was Potter’s side who were on the front foot, they could’ve been ahead after 20 seconds after Diego Dalot’s mistake let Leandro Trossard in on the left hand side but the Belgian only managed to find the side netting.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 30th minute as Gross was found unmarked to easily tap home a cross by former United man Danny Welbeck.

And less than 10 minutes later it went from bad to worse for Ten Hag as it was Gross again who was at the right place at the right time to hit a rebound into the net after United goal keeper David de Gea parried a shot by Solly March.

It was 2-0 at half time and the United team were booed off by their disgruntled fans. In the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo was introduced in the 53rd minute.

But the want away forward could not inspire a come back. United did pull one back after an almighty goal mouth scramble which resulted in an own goal by Alexis MacAllister.

The visitors held on as they recorded their first ever victory at Old Trafford, after 12 defeats and two draws, they came away as winners at long last.

United's defeat also meant that for the first time since 1973, the Red Devils have ended one season and started the next with a defeat. Not a good start for Ten Hag.

After the game Gross spoke about he and his team’s performance.

He said on Sky Sports: “We can’t ask for much more: three points away to Manchester United in their first home game. It’s a big win for us today.

“I don’t know [why I score so many against United]. I would love to score more goals against other teams.

“I think we played really well. The game plan was really good; we stuck to it and we were clinical in front of goal.”

Ten Hag will be looking for his first Premier League win next week when he takes his United side to Brentford.
