What happened to Harry Kane's teammates from his first-ever England squad?

Kane has gone on to become England's all-time top scorer, but what happened to the rest of the 24-man squad from that game in 2015?

With only his third touch in international football, a 21-year-old Harry Kane scored just 79 seconds after coming on for captain Wayne Rooney as England beat a poor Lithuania side at Wembley.

It was a debut to remember and a sign of things to come.

"It's a dream come true," he said after the game. "So excited to get my debut and to score so soon is a special night and one I won't forget. It's what you dream of as a kid."

The previous week, Roy Hodgson handed Kane a first England call-up after being impressed by his form. As well as scoring 26 goals in 42 games for Tottenham, he'd netted eight times in 10 appearances for England under-21s, which was enough to be included in European Championship qualifiers against Lithuania and Italy.

The rest, as they say, is history. "It's nice when fairytales come true and it has come true for Harry," said Hodgson after Kane headed home less than 80 seconds after coming on.

Of course, Kane has gone on to become England's all-time top goalscorer with 85 goals in 106 appearances, but what happened to the rest of the 24-man squad?

Goalkeepers

Joe Hart (Manchester City)

After retiring at the end of the 2023/24 season, Hart has established himself as one of the most respected pundits in the game, with his work for BBC at this summer's World Cup being widely praised.

In total, he made 705 appearances across spells at Manchester City, West Ham, Burnley, Tottenham and Celtic. He also earned 75 caps for England.

Fraser Forster (Southampton)

Last month, the former Southampton and Spurs goalkeeper signed a one-year contract to extend his stay at Bournemouth, who will play Europa League football for the first time in their history next season after securing a sixth-place finish.

The 38-year-old didn't make a first-team appearance for the club across 2025-26 but brought valuable experience to the Cherries' dressing room.

Defenders

Leighton Baines (Everton)

Baines is currently an assistant manager at Everton, forming part of David Moyes' coaching staff alongside Billy McKinlay and Alan Irvine.

The former left-back, who earned 30 caps for England, decided to hang up his boots in 2020 after a 13-year spell at the Toffees. He also made more than 150 appearances for Wigan between 2002 and 2007.

Gary Cahill (Chelsea)

Like many of his former teammates, Cahill has turned his hand to punditry. He frequently appears on Premier League Productions, the company responsible for broadcasting England's top flight to 185 countries overseas.

The former defender played for Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth before retiring in 2022. He represented England on 61 occasions.

Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton)

At the time of writing, Clyne plays for Premier League side Crystal Palace. The 35-year-old made 14 appearances in all competitions across the 2025-26 campaign as Palace won the Conference League.

Clyne, who earned 14 caps for England, has previously spent time at Crystal Palace, Southampton, Liverpool and Bournemouth (loan).

Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal)

Gibbs is currently an on-air talent and host for The Inter Miami Show on Apple TV. He also co-founded the ONE FC youth soccer academy in Miami alongside former professionals Blaise Matuidi and Sylvain Marveaux.

The former defender made over 350 career appearances across spells at Arsenal, Norwich (loan), West Brom and Inter Miami. He earned 10 England caps between 2010 and 2015.

Phil Jagielka (Everton)

Like the previously mentioned Cahill, former Everton and Sheffield United defender Phil Jagielka has turned his hand to punditry, as well as youth coaching. He retired from football at the age of 41.

"All good things come to an end and after just over 800 appearances my playing career is done," Jagielka, who made 40 caps for his country, said in late 2023. His previous clubs also include Derby County and Stoke City.

Phil Jones (Manchester United)

Jones is currently working as a first-team coach at Championship club Sheffield United. He joined manager Chris Wilder’s backroom staff in June 2026 following a brief coaching spell at Blackburn.

The former Manchester United defender retired in 2024 with 27 England caps to his name.

Luke Shaw (Manchester United)

More than a decade after playing alongside then-England debutant Kane and Shaw is still playing for Manchester United. The full-back, who has earned 34 caps for England, started every Premier League game across the 2025-26 campaign.

Chris Smalling (Manchester United)

Smalling is currently a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Fayha.

The 36-year-old, who has 31 caps for England, made more than 300 appearances for Manchester United during a ten-year spell at the club. He left Old Trafford for Italian side Roma in 2019 and spent five seasons with the club.

Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur)

The 36-year-old currently plays for Championship side Burnley following spells at Tottenham and Manchester City. He was just four caps away from reaching a century for England.

Midfielders

Ross Barkley (Everton)

Barkley is still going strong at 32. He made 23 appearances across all competitions for Aston Villa this season as they secured Champions League football.

The midfielder, who has 33 England caps to his name, is on his way to 500 career appearances following spells across at Everton, Sheffield Wednesday (loan), Leeds (loan), Chelsea, Nice and Luton Town.

Michael Carrick (Manchester United)

Carrick was recently named Manchester United head coach following a successful spell as interim boss. He was offered a full-time deal this summer after succeeding Ruben Amorim in January.

After winning 34 England caps, Carrick decided to hang up his boots at the end of the 2017/18 season. He made 463 appearances for United after joining the club from Spurs in 2006 for £18 million.

Fabian Delph (Aston Villa)

Delph retired in 2022 and is currently working as a pundit and ambassador. He has previously worked for Manchester City as part of the club's ‘Matchday Live on Tour’ broadcasting team.

The 36-year-old, who earned 20 caps for his country between 2014 and 2019 and came through the ranks at Leeds United, went on to play for City and Everton following his six-year spell at Aston Villa.

Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)

Henderson was named in Thomas Tuchel's 26-man World Cup squad and made a brief appearance in England's group stage clash against Panama this month, but is a huge doubt for the remainder of the tournament after suffering a wrist injury.

The 36-year-old currently plays his club football for Premier League side Brentford.

Adam Lallana (Liverpool)

In early 2026, Lallana was named the permanent head coach of Southampton's under-21 side. He took on a first-team coaching role at the club under former manager Will Still.

The former midfielder, who won 34 caps for his country, announced his retirement from football in June last year. His previous clubs include Bournemouth, Liverpool, Southampton and Brighton.

James Milner (Manchester City)

After breaking the all-time Premier League appearance record, Milner retired in June, ending a 24-year career in England's top flight following a three-season spell with Brighton.

The former Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool midfielder made his England debut in 2009 and ended his international career with 61 caps to his name.

Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)

Sterling is currently a free agent following a brief spell with Eredivisie side Feyenoord. He is also heading up the newly established RS7 Academy, which has been introduced to train young talent.

Across his hugely successful career, the former Liverpool and Manchester City winger has scored 197 goals in 654 club appearances. He has also earned 82 caps for England.

Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur)

Townsend currently plays for Thai League 1 side Kanchanaburi Power FC and has impressed while serving as a co-commentator for ITV at this summer's World Cup.

The 34-year-old, who has previously spent time at Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Everton and Luton Town, made 13 appearances for England between 2013 and 2016, when he was at Tottenham.

Theo Walcott (Arsenal)

Walcott has become a regular feature on our screens as a TV pundit, working for the likes of Sky Sports and the BBC. He is also a club ambassador at former club Arsenal.

The former winger, who went on to play for Everton and Southampton (again) after leaving Arsenal, retired in 2024 with 47 caps to his name. He remains the youngest England debutant in history at 17 years and 75 days old.

Forwards

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Since making his debut in 2015, Kane has gone on to become England's all-time top scorer with 85 goals in 106 appearances.

It has been a superb season for the Bayern Munich striker, who has netted 73 goals in all competitions across the 2025-26 campaign. He will be hoping to add to that tally when England take on Norway in the World Cup quarter-final.

Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

Rooney has tried his hand at management and punditry since hanging up his boots.

He took charge of Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle between 2020 and 2024 before becoming a regular fixture on Match of the Day as a pundit. He also has his own podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show.

Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

Another day, another pundit. Sturridge, who last played for A League side Perth Glory in 2022, can often be seen giving his analysis on Sky Sports.

The 36-year-old scored 77 goals in 200 Premier League appearances across spells at Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Bolton and West Brom. He finished his career with 26 England caps and eight goals for his country.

Danny Welbeck (Arsenal)

Welbeck enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career across 2025-26. The 35-year-old striker netted 13 Premier League goals for Brighton and was in serious contention to be named in Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad, but was eventually left out.

He currently has 42 England caps to his name.
