Thomas Tuchel makes Kobbie Mainoo decision ahead of squad announcement as Adam Wharton spot 'in doubt'

England boss Thomas Tuchel faces the unwinnable task of announcing his World Cup squad, and one man whose fate has already been determined is Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo.

The England boss recently released a provisional squad that boasted a number of central midfielders, including Alex Scott, Kobbie Mainoo, and Adam Wharton.

The competition to bolster England's midfield is strong, which comes as quite a reprieve to England fans, who have been plugging square pegs in round holes with makeshift trios that shift Bellingham into uncharted positions.

But with Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson appearing to be nailed-on for the plane to Tuchel's first international competition, reports suggest that the revitalised Kobbie Mainoo will be joining them.

With the arrival of Michael Carrick to Old Trafford, Kobbie Mainoo has restarted his career, playing all but one of the 15 games with the ex-England international in charge.

With huge moments, such as a late winner against Liverpool, Mainoo has earned enough respect from Manchester United to offer him a new contract, and now it looks like he'll be spending the summer in North America.

According to reports from Talksport, Kobbie Mainoo is expected to be named in the final 25-man England squad for the 2026 World Cup.

At his expense, Adam Wharton's hopes of a first-class ticket appears to have been dampened, despite featuring in a Three Lions jersey in the March warm-ups.

While Mainoo won't be too empathetic for the Crystal Palace midfielder, he may be sharing some animosity for another Manchester United player.

With Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa cemented in the heart of the England defence, stalwart figure Harry Maguire is reported to have been 'snubbed'.

The established figure told TalkSport, "I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the players all the best."

That opens the door to Levi Colwill instead, whose return from injury has been positive enough, despite Chelsea's poor form.

The official England World Cup squad will be announced on Friday, through an announcement event at Wembley, kicking off at 9.45am BST.
