Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed that he has terminal cancer, and has 'maybe at best a year' to live.

The Swedish boss coached England between 2001 and 2006, off the back of a successful spell with Lazio.

After managing them at Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup, and left the role shortly after the following tournament before a stint with Manchester City.

He then went on to have several coaching roles elsewhere, including with Leicester City and the Mexico national team.

Now 75, Eriksson revealed to Swedish radio station P1 that he is suffering from terminal cancer, and has 'maybe at best a year, maybe at best even longer' to live.

He explained (quotes via Sky News): "Everyone understands that I have an illness that is not good. Everyone guesses it's cancer, and it is.

"But I have to fight as long as I can."

When asked about his prognosis, Eriksson replied that he had 'maybe at best a year, at worst a little less, or at best maybe even longer. Or in the best case I suppose even longer'.

"I don't think the doctors I have can be totally sure, they can't put a day on it. You can't be absolutely sure. It is better not to think about it," he said.

Eriksson's most recent managerial role was a spell with the Philippines national team, where he spent three months before moving into a consultancy role.

He then became the sporting director of Swedish third division side Karlstad Football, resigning from that position last year due to 'health issues that were under investigation'.

During his spell in charge of England, the Swede won 40 games and guided a side dubbed the 'Golden Generation' to the quarter-finals of Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup, with the Three Lions losing on penalties to Portugal on both occasions.
