England fans have hit out at controversial former player Joey Barton after his social media post following the Lionesses win in the Euro 2025 final.
Despite entering the match as underdogs, England beat Spain in the final of Euro 2025, winning the major international tournament for the second consecutive time.
Goals from Spain's Mariona Caldentey and Arsenal star Alessia Russo led to a 1-1 scoreline at the full-time whistle, and after playing 30 minutes of additional time, the match was decided by a penalty shootout.
Alex Greenwood, Niamh Charles and Chloe Kelly found the back of the net for England while new no.1 keeper Hannah Hampton produced several stunning saves to secured a 3-2 shootout win.

However, England's historic win was not enough to impress controversial pundit Barton, who has received backlash on social media for his opinion on the result.

As soon as the Lionesses confirmed their place as champions of Europe once again, social media posts congratulating them on their huge achievement immediately came flooding in.
But Barton instead felt the need to once again use what was a big moment for women's football to make his feelings about the sport in general known.

Posting on X, he wrote: "Well done to the Lioness winning the Nonsense Pottery Trophy.
"Those penalties were borderline embarrassing again.
"Don’t ever ask for equal pay again. Youse are miles off it."
Of course, Barton's inflammatory post was immediately met with backlash online, with many pointing out that the Lionesses have enjoyed a much more successful international career than Barton himself.

Replying to the post, one fan wrote: "They’ve literally won the Euros more than you’ve played games for England."
Another added: "Amazing how retirement turns average footballers into world-class critics. The Lionesses will surely take your advice right after polishing their “nonsense” silverware."
While one joked: "Just pulled up the Joey Barton best moments. There aren't any."

Throughout his 14 year playing career, Barton made just one appearance for the England international team with an 11 minute cameo in a friendly match with Spain back in February 2007.
Despite this, Barton still feels obliged to regularly speak out on social media to make his feelings about women's football known.
