It has been a massive summer of football, and with the upcoming season on the horizon, there is already plenty to dissect. With the highest stakes come the biggest emotions, and fans are currently debating the state of the modern game more than ever.
Football has seen plenty of different rule changes lately, but there’s one law that many fans agree is due a rethink. According to new research from Gillette, over three-quarters of fans (76%) agree that players should be allowed to celebrate a massive goal by taking their shirt off, without getting booked for it.
In fact, 1 in 2 of fans say the yellow card for shirt-removal should be scrapped entirely, while a further 29% think referees should allow the celebration in ‘exceptional’ moments.
More than a celebration
So what’s behind the shirts-off celebration? The research found that when a player whips their shirt off, it’s a symbol of raw passion and emotion.
Well over half of those surveyed said it adds great drama to a big goal, while 61% agreed it is the absolute best way to celebrate a last-minute winner.
A massive 85% of fans already knew that going shirtless brings an automatic booking in the pro leagues, awareness drops lower down the pyramid. Just over half of fans knew that grassroots players can also be booked for it, and that their local clubs can face a fine as a result.
Worth the booking?
Even with the prospect of a yellow card, fans still want to see that emotion. A solid 64% of those asked said they would still be happy to see their team’s player take their shirt off, regardless of whether they got booked or not.
Fans feel the celebration is most warranted in exceptional moments, like scoring a last-minute winner, finding the net in the knockout stages of a tournament, clinching a promotion, or securing an emotional comeback. Or, of course, scoring an absolute worldie.
So, should this celebration be re-legalised in football going forward?
