Sir Keir Starmer breaks silence after England win Euro 2025 final as Bank Holiday stance clear

The British Prime Minister has spoken out for the first time since England's historic win.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has spoken out for the first time after England won the Euro 2025 final.

On Sunday night, England secured a historic win in the final of the 2025 Women's European Championship as they beat World Champions Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Despite taking the lead thanks to an early goal from Mariona Caldentey, Spain couldn't hold the Lionesses back and Alessia Russo scored an equaliser shortly before the hour mark.

Penalties converted by Alex Greenwood, Niamh Charles and tournament hero Chloe Kelly secured the win for Sarina Weigman's side at St. Jakob-Park in Basel.

Tributes to the England squad have since poured in congratulating them on the win, and now Prime Minister Starmer has spoken out to give his view on the final.

Throughout England's campaign in the Euro 2025 tournament, Starmer has been regularly spoken out on social media to show his support and praise their talents.

And, of course, this was no different in the final as he quickly took to social media to congratulate the Lionesses on their monumental win.

Posting on X, Starmer wrote: "Champions! Congratulations Lionesses— what a team. What a game. What drama.

"You dug deep when it mattered most and you’ve made the nation proud. History makers."

Shortly after his statement, fans immediately took to the replies to ask Starmer if the win would mean that England would be given a bank holiday to celebrate the win after the politician previously pushed for a bank holiday after the Women's World Cup final in 2023.

Sir Keir Starmer's stance on England bank holiday

At the time of the 2023 World Cup final, the 62-year-old was merely leader of the opposition but called for the-then Conservative government to make the decision in the event silverware was lifted.

He said: "They have already done us proud, but if they win it will be a truly historic achievement - one that should be marked with a proper day of celebration, where clubs can open and promote access for women and girls."

England just fell short then, but this time around, Arsenal season ticket holder Starmer, having been the Prime Minister for around a year after Labour won the 2024 General Election, has the power to honour the potential achievement.
