Gareth Southgate responds to 'Wembley boos' following shock Iceland defeat ahead of Euro 2024

England were stunned 1-0 at Wembley by Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson's early strike

England boss Gareth Southgate has spoken out after the Three Lions were booed off following their shock defeat to Iceland at Wembley.

The Three Lions suffered a 1-0 loss last night after Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson’s early low shot crept in past Aaron Ramsdale and it proved to be decisive as Iceland emerged victorious.

After a 3-0 victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina earlier this week and confirming his final 26-man squad for the tournament in Germany, it was not the ideal end to preparations for EURO 2024.

England are in Group C alongside Slovenia, Denmark and Serbia, with their first match against Serbia on June 16.

Four days later, Southgate's side take on Denmark, before the final group match on June 25 versus Slovenia.

Despite the friendly loss, England remain among the favourites to win the tournament, alongside France, hosts Germany, Portugal and Spain.

Following the defeat at the hands of Iceland, the Wembley crowd made their feelings known as they booed the Three Lions off the pitch at the conclusion of their final warm-up match.

England boss Southgate addressed his team being jeered off following the loss and admitted that supporters would have expected to have been entertained and leave on a high before heading to the tournament in Germany.

But he has vowed that England will be ready when they take on Serbia on June 16 and give a better showing than they did against Iceland.

He said: "I'm confident we will be better than we were tonight against Serbia in our opening game.

"You would like a good performance and a crowd that's been entertained to leave them on a high before the Euros and clearly we weren't at the level we needed to be.

"In a way it will focus the mind and it shows that any complacency, or thinking that talent alone is going to get us this trophy, won't be enough.

"We have to be spot-on to win every game at this level. Iceland deserved to win, but it will focus our minds that we have to do better next weekend.

"It was a disjointed and disappointing performance and we didn't show enough character.

"It's not perfect but I've been involved in a lot of these last matches before a tournament as a player as well. No excuses for the result but there's a lot of things we can put right quickly. There were questions asked that we weren't able to answer."
