Harry Kane transfer bombshell drops days before England's next World Cup game

Kane's future at Bayern Munich continues to be a talking point.

Barcelona have made contact with Harry Kane's representatives to explore whether a deal would be possible after this summer's World Cup – but the club have already been dealt a major setback.

Kane has enjoyed arguably the best season of his career across 2025-26, scoring 70 goals for club and country.

In fact, only Lionel Messi sits above the 32-year-old for most goals in a single season by a player this century. As a result of his form, the England international continues to be linked with a big-money move.

Bayern Munich are keen to tie him down to a new contract and discussions have already taken place over a new deal until 2029, according to reports.

However, Barcelona are prepared to go all out to sign Kane as they look to replace Robert Lewandowski, who is set to join MLS side Chicago Fire following the expiry of his contract at the Camp Nou.

A report from the Daily Mail suggests Barca have reached out to the representatives of Kane to see if a move could play out as he enters the final year of his contract at Bayern.

It is also noted that the former Tottenham striker is 'extremely happy' at the German club, who would 'resist any attempt to sign their star player'.

In fact, Kane's camp are said to have 'shut down the conversation' of a move to the recently-crowned La Liga champions, when they received a phone call from Barcelona to explore a move.

What has Harry Kane said about his future?

Despite previously hinting at a return to the Premier League, Kane downplayed the prospect of returning to English football in the near future.

He also said he would be willing to open talks about a new contract at Bayern.

"In terms of staying longer, I could definitely see that," Kane said.

"I have not had those conversations with Bayern yet, but if they were to arise, I would be willing to talk and have an honest conversation. Obviously, it depends on how the next year or so goes and what we achieve together.

"We are in a fantastic moment and I am not thinking about anything else."

Kane added: "In terms of the Premier League, I don't know. If you had asked me when I first left to go to Bayern, I would have said for sure I would come back. Now I have been there a couple of years, I would probably say that has gone down a little bit, but I wouldn't say I would never go back."

Harry Kane has already explained what he needs to do to win the Ballon d'Or

Kane is certainly in contention to win the Ballon d'Or following a superb campaign for club and country.

However, the striker has previously admitted that, alongside winning the World Cup itself, there is one other thing that he must achieve in order to be in genuine contention for the biggest individual prize in football.

Speaking in November, Kane said: "I could score 100 goals this season but if I don't win the Champions League or the World Cup, you're probably not going to win the Ballon d'Or," he said.

"It's the same with Erling Haaland [at Manchester City]. It's the same with any player. You have to be winning those major trophies.

"With the way the season is going as a team with Bayern Munich [unbeaten in all 17 matches across all competitions], it looks like we're in great shape. It looks like we're one of the favourites for the Champions League, for sure.

"So that maybe makes the odds a little bit more in my favour. Same with England. I think we're going to go into the tournament as one of the favourites."

Of course, Paris Saint-Germain went on to defend their Champions League crown in May, while England will be hoping to go all the way at this summer's World Cup. They will face DR Congo in the round of 32 on Wednesday.
