Diego Costa was sent off for headbutting Ben Mee in Saturday's Premier League match between Brentford and Wolves.

The incident occurred deep into second-half injury time with the match level at 1-1.

Earlier in the game, Mee had given Brentford the lead shortly after the half-time interval with a stunning volley.

But Wolves immediately hit back through Ruben Neves, who scored just two minutes after Mee's spectacular opener.

In the fourth minute of added time at the end of the second half, Costa clashed with Mee while jostling on the edge of the Brentford area.

Mee collapsed to the floor after appearing to be headbutted by the former Chelsea striker, who joined Wolves on a free transfer last month.

Referee Bobby Madley missed the incident but was instructed to consult the pitchside monitor by VAR.

Replays showed Costa and Mee accidentally clashing heads before the Wolves striker appeared to make a deliberate second attempt to connect with the Brentford defender.

After reviewing the footage, Madley brandished a red card to Costa for violent conduct.

It was the seventh red card of Costa's career and fans on social media were quick to react to his latest sending off.

"Was only a matter of time," posted one supporter on Twitter.

"Back to his old self," added another.

While a third wrote: "He certainly hasn't changed much."

Despite having the play the final few minutes with 10 men, Wolves held on to secure a 1-1 draw away from home.

Costa is yet to score for Wolves since joining the Premier League club as a free agent, following his departure from Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro.

The veteran striker was signed to provide attacking reinforcements after striker Sasa Kalajdzic suffered a serious injury just days joining Wolves in a £15m deal from Stuttgart.

Kalajdzic, who had been linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury just 45 minutes into his Wolves debut against Southampton last month.
