Liverpool are set to complete the signing of 22-year-old Benfica forward Darwin Nuñez in the coming days.

According to Portuguese news outlet O Jogo, Benfica have accepted a bid from the reds worth approximately £85 million. An initial fee of £68.5 million potentially rising to the total sum of £85 million with add-ons.

Fans of the Reds will view the signing of Nuñez as a major coup. The Uruguayan forward has been linked with a move to Manchester United but has reportedly favoured making the switch to Merseyside this summer. It would appear the 22-year-old’s demands will be satisfied.

As for what the Benfica man will bring to Liverpool, it’s pretty simple, goals – and a lot of them. The prolific forward has bagged 32 goals from 38 Primeira Liga and Champions League matches this season. Nuñez versatility will have also attracted the reds, with the youngster able to play both on the left flank and down the middle.

Nuñez will arrive at Anfield as a direct replacement for Sadio Mané. Reds’ legend Mané is set to join Bayern Munich this summer. However, the German giants are yet to provide a sufficient offer for the Senegal international, so Jürgen Klopp could yet line up with a fearsome front three of Mané, Nuñez, and Salah.

The move for Nuñez sees Liverpool show ambition in a transfer window in which they simply must spend big. With Manchester City signing Dortmund forward Erling Haaland, Liverpool need to use the market to keep up with their rivals. The Reds are also believed to be on the hunt for a new midfielder.

So, with Nuñez’s switch to Liverpool all but complete, the signing could have something of a domino effect for the transfer market. Sadio Mané will now likely move to Bayern Munich sooner rather than later, which’ll enable Robert Lewandowski to make his proposed switch to Barcelona. The signing of Nuñez will be expensive for Liverpool, but Reds fans will be hoping the Uruguayan can deliver.
